At first glance, you might think your pet’s standard of living has no direct connection to your life. But what if I told you that within a single year, by putting special attention, focus, and care on your pet’s quality of life, you can bring extraordinary shifts and changes to your own life? Would you believe me?
Unfortunately, most pet owners don’t ever explore this amazing tool for self-reflection and transformation. They see their pet and their pet’s life as something external, separate from their own experience of life.
Unfortunately, most pet owners don’t ever explore this amazing tool for self-reflection and transformation.
I have multiple pets myself, and I’ve been working with people with pets for years, and have studied and discovered something remarkable: nearly every pet directly reflects their owner’s own life experience, sometimes down to very precise details. And by simply making intentional changes and shifts in your pet’s life and your relationship to them you can change your own life in a relatively short period of time.
In 2021, I was living with my family in a two bedroom apartment. For us, having three kids and two adults in a two bedroom was quite a tight space to live in. In addition to that, we had two hamsters, two guinea pigs and seven parakeets. You read that right, Seven! One I rescued. Two of the birds a friend brought to us because she could no longer take care of them. Another one I got when I was buying a bird as a gift for a good friend and so on and so forth. So as a result, somehow, within a short period of time we ended up with seven parakeets in a small cage.
I had attached two decently large cages together, thinking it would be a good amount of space for the birds. “That is as much space as I could give them,” I thought, keeping in mind that we were living in a two bedroom. But not for long. Because the Universe had a different plan for them, and for us and acted through my sister, Elya. Elya absolutely adored parakeets and always read about them. She participated in all sorts of group chats and continuously learned about parakeets’ diet and living conditions. Knowing that I had seven birds now, Elya wanted to see them when we spoke over a video chat. When she saw the cage structure I put together she began to explain to me how the cage should be prolonged, and that the horizontal space was more important than the height. She couldn’t stop talking for a while, explaining to me how parakeets sleep on the highest bar in the cage and why. In response to my argument that at the moment we didn’t have much space in our apartment even for ourselves, my sister reminded me of the very thing I’ve been sharing with her for years. That “our pets reflect our reality.” Her counter-argument was,”Therefore it means that if you get them a bigger cage, you will get a bigger place for yourself”
…my sister reminded me of the very thing I’ve been sharing with her for years. That “our pets reflect our reality.”
It’s funny to me how she used the very thing I have been sharing with her as a tool to convince me. And I’m so grateful she did. Even though at the beginning I was a bit upset with her, that same night I ended up ordering a new, much bigger cage. The biggest I could find. This cage was a bit outside of what I was willing to invest. And I had to wait for it a bit longer. I ordered the biggest one I could find online. I always knew that I wanted a decently large house. And my thought was that if I wanted a huge house, I would have to get a huge cage. So about three weeks later, I had a giant cage in my living room. This cage was so large that my parakeets could fly freely in it. I was very happy about the decision. And the very first person I shared the photos and videos of my very happy birds in their new home with was my sister. She was surprised and super happy for them.
This one is my personal story about the connection between our pets and our lives. I have many but chose this one as it’s one of the rapid, grand scale things that have happened in my life. This event showed me once again that by making a simple change in your reality, you shift the whole experience to an amazing degree. And your life becomes a reflection of changes made.
In my experience, I have found that our pets can reflect our reality across five different categories. But focusing on a category at at a time, we can work with the principles mentioned above, to spark transformation in our lives.
Nutrition
Living Space
Care Delegation
Exercise
Socialization
